About Dark Pines

Dark Pines is a two-man shop in Arlington, Washington, run by Bryant Hamblen and Wayne Brem. We CNC machine knives and tools in our small shop and finish them by hand.

The two of us

Wayne Brem is a full-time specialty machinist. Much of his work is in the luxury and sport yachting world.

Bryant Hamblen is the designer. He has an eye for perfection and a knack for anything fidget.

We've both always had a passion for tools and machining. Dark Pines is our take on one of the world's oldest tools.

How we make it

Parts are CNC machined in our Arlington shop, then finished by hand. These are the materials we use, as listed on our product pages:

  • Blade steels: CPM-154 (Widow Maker 3.5 v.2), 440C (Skyline Fixed Blade, Hodges blade), AEB-L (Skyline 2.0), DLC-coated Nitro-V (Bullet), Nitro-V (SwitchBack)
  • Handles and bodies: G-10, canvas Micarta, Grade 5 titanium, naval brass, copper, cocobolo, carbon fiber
  • Trays: 6061 aluminum, anodized black, with Delrin inserts

When a part comes from another maker, we say who made it. Widow Maker sheaths are kydex from Red Hill Sheaths, and TiConnector Torx screws hold the scales on. The Skyline 2.0 ships with a leather sheath by Badger Claw Outfitters. Our custom pens start as Tactile Turn titanium bodies machined in Dallas, TX.

The Hodges tools are named after Will Hodges, a good friend and motivator. Every SwitchBack is numbered and serialized, and it comes in an air- and water-tight box with a COA coin.
